New scholarships were awarded at the Advance Ashburton Community Foundation scholarship ceremony on Tuesday night at the Ashburton Event Centre.

They were awarded to Jesse Chapman, Kaitlyn Murray, and jointly to Olivia Lill and Taylah Burrowes.

The four were among 28 recipients to receive scholarships valued in total of $96,400 for study, training and personal development.

The inaugural Ashburton Vintage Car Club Scholarship for an apprentice in the automotive industry was awarded to apprentice motorcycle mechanic, Jesse, who works at Honda Country Ashburton.

The new Longfield Scholarship for tertiary education was jointly awarded to fifth year law students, Olivia and Taylah. While the EA Networks Scholarship was awarded to Kaitlyn who is studying accounting and marketing at the University of Otago.

Foundation executive officer Carolyn Clough said with the presentation of this year’s scholarships the foundation has now awarded more than $1 million in scholarships.

‘‘Through the generosity of local donors, Advance Ashburton scholarships have assisted 411 local people in their further education and training since 2010,’’ Clough said.

Demand for the scholarships was unprecedented with a record number of 129 applications.

The value of the scholarships ranged from $1000 to $20,000.

Among the scholarships presented were Johnston Brothers Health Science Scholarships. This years presentation of the scholarships to third year medical student, Harrison Boulton, and Sophie Smith who is studying towards a Master of Social Work (Applied) marked a significant milestone as they were the 40th of Johnston Brothers scholarships to be awarded.

Over the 12 years they have been awarded to support those from the district studying within the Health Science disciplines, $133,000 worth of the scholarships have been made.

Others to receive scholarships were: Tinwald Club Scholarship – Daniel Thompson, Lorraine Paterson and Holly Husband: Ashburton Jaycees Industry Training Scholarship – Charles McCully and Melissa Foley.

Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains Trade Scholarship – Molly McKenna: Kate Syme Scholarship – Rosa Armstrong.

Smyth Scholarship – Janelle Galos: Glass Family Scholarship – Fahima Safi. Dennis & Barbara Taylor Nursing Scholarship – Leah Maw: Ashburton UFS Health Science Scholarship – Hailey Collins, Morgan Welsh, Jonty Small, Isabelle Harris, Olivia Haley and Maddie Webb.

Ian Glassey Memorial Scholarship – Tamsin Cartney: Parsons Family Scholarship – Nicholas McDowell. Cameron Family Scholarship – Gabbie Tindall: Frank Crampton Agricultural Scholarship – Sophie Sauer.

Colin & Alison Crampton Music and Arts Scholarship – Maria Lawn and Courtney Hickmott.
