Ashburton Anglican Church’s third nativity exhibition has been heralded a success with more than 320 people attending.

Pupils from Kiwi Class at St Joseph’s School were among one of many groups from pre schools to rest homes who enjoyed their visit to check out about 90 nativity scenes on display at St Stephens Parish .

One that captured the attention of the youngsters was the gingerbread scene.

Five-year-old Ana Cutajar said she liked the smell of it, while five-year-old Jack Nordquist liked all the lights intertwined among the scenes.

After hearing about the nativity scenes depicting the birth of Jesus from vicar Indrea Alexander, the pupils created their own nativity scene.

They donned costumes to take on the roles of angels, shepherds, wise men and animals before stepping into the manger with Mary and Joseph.

Parish administrator Carolyn Bentley said it was such a joy seeing the look on people’s faces as they wandered among the nativity scenes.

Along with the exhibition which ran for 10 days, the entries in the colouring competition, open to children and adults, were on display.

The winners for the competition were: under 5: Abel Mason, 4, of Ashburton Baptist Preschool; 5-6 years: Max Charlton, 5, home schooled; 7-9 years: Asher, 9, of St Joseph’s School; and 16-years and over: Rachel Pilling.
