Two classrooms for Hinds

New classrooms at Hinds School are ready to be set in place this week.

It will give the school two extra classrooms, more toilets and allow the library to be reclaimed.

Board of trustees presiding member Cole Groves said a relocatable building had come from a school at Russley, in Christchurch.

It was due to be fixed in place on its foundation this week and was likely to be used by a middle school syndicate of year two or three.

But that final decision will be made by principal Amanda Ferguson, he said.

“We are waiting for our consent, we can’t do much more until after that,” he said.

“There are two classrooms there, a new set of toilets and we are upgrading our sceptic system, because we have to, with new classrooms going on.”

“We will probably only use one classroom to start with now.

“Then depending on which area of the school needs that second classroom, we will put that in, so the classroom sizes aren’t too high.”

The school, which has a roll of about 170 pupils, had grown by 50 pupils from when Groves started with the board six years ago.

He said the former library was being used as a classroom.

“Technically that’s not a classroom but we use it as a classroom because it is bigger.”

A smaller space – owned by the Hinds School Charitable Trust, not the Ministry of Education – had been set up as a mini library.

The trust was set up when Lowcliffe School closed.

“We have outgrown ourselves,” Groves said.

Meanwhile, last week the school got a $1000 boost after being named Ruralco Spend for your School recipient – twice.

What was usually a one-off $500 donation, was doubled when it was nominated by two different people for the months of November and December.

Ruralco’s Jono Pavey, general manager farm supplies, was at the school on Friday to present it with two $500 prizes.

Also present were the merchant sponsors for each month – Tarbotton Land and Civil (November), and Gluyas Motor Company (December).

Pavey said the programme had been running for two years and every month $500 was given to a Mid Canterbury primary school.

“Hinds hasn’t won it until today … when it went back-to-back and won November and December,” he said.

The programme works with Ruralco merchants where if members spend five transactions a month using their Ruralco card, they go in the draw to win the chance to nominate their school of choice.

Alison and Matthew Burrough won in November, while Shayne Jones won in December.

Both parties had, or knew, children at the school.

Merchant representatives Tim Tarbotton and Sarah Gluyas were also on site for the presentation.

Tarbotton said it was a “great initiative” to be involved with, while Gluyas said it was “a fantastic opportunity to give back to the community”.
