The victim of a crash on a road with a poor surface said she feels lucky to have come away with no broken bones.

Rachel, who wanted to be known only by her first name, hit a utility pole in wet weather after sliding off Longbeach Rd about 12.45pm on June 7.

‘‘My ute slid on the smooth road,’’ Rachel said.

‘‘The crash was scary, I still remember crashing into the phone pole,’’ Rachel said.

The pole was severed. Rachel escaped the vehicle via the passenger door.

She said she had now ‘‘pretty much recovered’’ from a large bruise on her right hip, sustained due to the impact through the driver’s door of hitting the pole, and muscle soreness.

Rachel said she was pleased with a district council commitment, as reported in last week’s The Ashburton Courier, to watercut excess bitumen off the surface to fix the road as soon as possible.

But the road should have been fixed ‘‘some time ago’’, she said.

‘‘It’s all good and well saying this is what they will do, but when is it happening?’’ Rachel said.

‘‘I would like to see the plan with dates for the upgrades/updates on the regional roads.’’

The district council responded to say a machine for the Longbeach Rd repair ‘‘is coming in July’’.

There are other sites on the district council’s list for watercutting this winter.

They are Beach Rd East between Trevors Rd and Cochranes Rd, and Seafield Rd at the intersection with Christys Rd and Fairfield Rd.
