Rotary Clubs across New Zealand have set a goal to collect 1 million cans of food for their Cans for a Cause project during June.
Collected items will be given to foodbanks.
Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains spokesperson Carolyn Clough said the items collected in Mid Canterbury will go to the foodbanks at Hakatere Marae, St Vincent De Paul and the community foodbank operated by the Salvation Army.
‘‘We live in a wonderfully generous community who are very supportive of the annual Toot for Tucker at a time of the year that can be a challenge for families,’’ she said.
‘‘We know people are doing it tough now and as we head into winter with an increase in power bills and heating homes, buying extra clothing and keeping them and their families well.
“These added costs can stretch peoples’ budgets. Collecting the cans and other non-perishable will support foodbanks to be well stocked when people need assistance,’’ Clough said.
Cans for Cause is the first nationwide collection for foodbanks undertaken by Rotary clubs. Rotary believes this will be the biggest national collection of items for foodbanks.
The club’s collection starts on June 3 and runs through until June 18.
