With a focus on families, the Ashburton Toy Library have a novel idea to collect cans of food items and other non-perishables for the foodbanks at St Vincent de Paul, Hakatere Marae and the Salvation Army.

The toy library is holding a two-week drive where non-perishable food items can be given in exchange for toy hire.

The ‘‘can drive’’ starts tomorrow and runs until July 19.

Library committee member Anthea Moore said during that two-week period members can hire up to five toys in exchange for one non-perishable food item per toy hire.

‘‘We welcome new members to join the toy library to take part in this can drive as well,’’ Moore said.

Members who give items go in the draw for a $40 hire credit.

‘‘The toy library being a community organisation like to support other community organisations, when and how we can; this being a great way to get behind other community organisations,’’ Moore said.

‘‘The volunteer committee are very aware of the food banks needing to replenish their supplies at this time of the year, so this is an idea to help,’’ Moore said.

– The Ashburton Toy Library is at 21 Archibald St. It is open Tuesday afternoons 3.30 to 5pm, and Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to 12:30pm.
