The Mayfield Memorial Hall entrance is now sporting a new memorial window.
It used to grace the walls of two of the town’s churches in Mayfield.
In 1965, the late Gordon Harrison presented the St Mary’s Anglican Church in Mayfield with an exquisite stain-glass window depicting a nativity scene.
Gordon’s grandson, John Harrison, was involved with having the window installed in the hall.
It is inscribed with ‘‘In memory of the pioneer settlers of the Mayfield District 1965.’’
John Harrison said the hall was used by many groups and the window was now able to be enjoyed by all hall users.
When St Mary’s was deconsecrated in 2001, and then sold, the window was carefully removed and taken across the road to Trinity Presbyterian Church.
It was put in a wooden frame with a light installed behind it to add a special feature.
With closure of the Trinity church earlier this year and then its sale, members of the Mayfield hall committee and community wanted to ensure the window was kept in the district and locals and visitors alike could view and enjoy it.
‘‘Moving the window to the hall has been meet with a great response,’’ Harrison said.
The newly placed window had its debut viewing at the Mayfield & Districts Lions Club annual change over at the beginning of July.
Meanwhile, descendants of William and Elizabeth Harrison, who arrived in New Zealand 150 years ago, are gathering for a family reunion at the Dorie Hall in November.
The Harrison’s travelled from Hollyford in Ireland and settled at Dorie in Mid Canterbury.
The reunion, involving lunch and speeches, is planned for November 8. For more information email [email protected]
