The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade celebrates 75 years of community service this weekend.
Those 75 years have seen many late nights, disrupted family time, tough jobs and teamwork; by those who go into a burning buildings when others are running out.
To honour present and past volunteers the brigade is holding a station open day on Saturday.
Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Tyrone Burrowes said the community was welcome to attend and help celebrate the significant milestone.
Along with Rakaia brigade volunteers, members from Lauriston and Pendarves fire brigades, with their rural fire trucks, will also be on hand to chat to visitors.
“This is a great chance for local families, friends and visitors to come along meet our members and learn more about what we do,” Burrowes said.
Static displays and house safety information will be supplemented with interactive activities. Among them the always popular ‘escape my house challenge’ where people can crawl from one end of a pop-up maze to the other.
Two vintage fire engines on loan from the Ashburton Fire Museum, will add a by-gone atmosphere to the day.
Burrowes said the weather forecast for Saturday is looking good, but if the day is chilly there are hot drinks and an all day sausage sizzle on hand to warm cold fingers.
– Open Day for the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade 75th celebration is on Saturday, from 10am to 2pm, at the station 28 Elizabeth St, Rakaia. All welcome.
