The Christmas tree in downtown Ashburton is decorated and will be lit up tomorrow at a festive community event.

The six metre tree sits in Baring Square East, by the town clock, and is adorned with around 600 baubles.

Mayor Neil Brown said the tree gave the town a festive feel and set the stage for the Light up the Night celebration; a chance to welcome in the festive season with an evening of music, live entertainment, and food.

The evening starts on Saturday at 6pm.

Santa and his elves will be mixing with the crowd and posing for photos, and there will be free facepainting and balloon twisting for the kids.

Entertainers include Libby Higson, Murran Carter-Buller, the Decibels Choir and performers from Life Dance Academy, and there will be plenty of tasty food on offer with a food court and 199 Cafe in the library staying open.

The evening will finish with the lighting of the tree around 9.15pm.
