Tinwald Branch of Red Cross, as a final community hooray, has donated a special, handcrafted trophy award to the pupils of Tinwald School.
The Red Cross Principles Award, made by members of the Ashburton MenzShed and engraved by Ashburton Engravers, was funded through the last remaining funds of the now-wound up Red Cross branch.
A donation was also made to the Ashburton MenzShed.
Red Cross area council committee member for Mid/ South Canterbury Judy Skevington said the Red Cross Principles Award was intended for a pupil of the school each year, who displayed many of the Red Cross seven principles; humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
“It’s for a pupil that shows an understanding of humanity, has given of their time voluntarily and is welcoming to all in the school community.”
“The four principles of impartiality, neutrality, independence and unity are already shown in the Tinwald BEST motto, as well as their Citizenship and Principal Awards.”
The Tinwald Red Cross Branch wound up earlier this year after 57 years of helping people in the community and overseas.
It was the result of just 13 members, many aged over 70, unable to commit to the role of president, secretary or treasurer.
Some members had continued as individual members with Red Cross, Mrs Skevington said.
The Red Cross’ focus in recent years has been disaster risk management, first aid courses and education, Meals on Wheels deliveries, migration programmes, restoring family links and fundraising opportunities.
The branch officially closed on March 18, 2022; coincidently the same day as when it started in 1965.
At the time of closure, members donated a Red Cross first aid kit to Tinwald Memorial Hall for use in the hall. They also donated two lightweight tables in memory of founding member, the late-Moira Mackenzie.
