The road remained closed and detours in place on Thursday afternoon following a single vehicle colliding with a power pole on Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road, near Anama Valetta Rd, that morning.

Police responded to the scene just before 10:40am. Mt Somers, Methven and Ashburton fire brigades attended, as well as St John.

A spokesperson for police said ‘‘two people were reported to have received minor injuries but were taken to hospital for further assessment.

‘‘The road is expected to be closed for some time while the power pole and lines are fixed.’’

It was a busy day so far for the district’s emergency services.

In Ashburton, they responded to a call out to the Countdown supermarket complex on East St shortly before 1pm. Two ambulances and police were on the scene.

A spokesperson for police said they were responding to a reported sudden death at a commercial premises on East St.

‘‘It appears the person had a medical event.’’

Then St John and fire crews from Methven and Mt Somers were called to a property near Staveley

Shortly after 5pm, Methven and Mt Somers firefighters and St John were called to a property near Staveley after a tractor rolled. One person was airlifted to hospital in a rescue helicopter.

About 7pm, Ashburton firefighters attended a kitchen fire in a house at Hampstead.
